Magma Properties
In class we built a table of magma properties that described the relationship between viscosity, temperature, silica content, gas content, and explosivity of a volcano. In this exercise, you will complete a chart showing the relationship between those same properties. Spelling counts!
1) On the blank lines A, B, & C, fill in the magma types based on increasing silica content arrow (felsic, intermediate, mafic). State the % silica content for each magma type.
2) Label each line on the diagram with the properties of: viscosity, temperature, volatile content, and explosivity. The first line has been labeled for you.
a) Use arrows to show the direction in which the property increases.
b) On the temperature line, state the maximum and minimum temperatures at which magma erupts

Volcano Morphology
Morphology is a word used to describe the shape of the land. Volcano morphology can reveal a lot about magma chemistry (i.e. silica content), volatile content, type of volcanic eruption, and eruption duration.
Instructions: Examine the morphology of each volcano below. Identify each type of volcano (shield volcano, cinder cone, composite cone, volcanic dome, or caldera) plus the magma type (mafic, intermediate, felsic) and volatile content (high, low, or variable) responsible for creating each volcano. The scale bars show relative (not exact) sizes.
