GIS Discussions

2 short responds without references.

1. In your field or area of expertise, what spatial data would you like to use? What problems interest you? Start thinking now. This may be helpful for the final!

Can you find a misleading map??

2.Check out our article for this week. Think critically about culture, cognition, interpretation, and meaning in maps. What resonated from this article? Why is map design SO important? Could there be ethical, statistical, or political consequences to a poorly designed map? Talk to me about it.

3. Talk to me about relational databases. How are they different from just "data"? Are you familiar with any kinds of relational databases out there in the real world? Have you worked with them before? What are some advantages to using relational databases?

4. Check out this great article with examples of vector analysis!  https://gisgeography.com/geoprocessing-tools/

After reading - describe which of these processing tools seems most valuable for the work you want to do in your career. Which of these tools will you leverage the most often? Describe different applications for these tools in your field of choice.

5. Check out these videos and think about the differences between using computer programming and scripts (ie. R/Python) versus GIS and mapping interfaces (ie. ArcMap/QGIS) to perform spatial operations. What are some benefits and challenges with each approach? Which do you prefer?

6. Let's think about some applications of 3-D GIS. Of course, it is a very interesting way to look at maps- but is it appropriate to look at things in 3-D all the time? What applications can you think of where 3-D GIS would be particularly appropriate or useful?

7. Read and respond to this article from ESRI:   https://www.esri.com/content/dam/esrisites/en-us/media/pdf/teach-with-gis/raster-faster.pdf

Discuss different applications of raster and vector data in light of all of the work we have done with them in class this semester. What fields warrant more focus on vector data models? What fields use raster more heavily? What are the pros and cons to both?

8.

Browse the ESRI Story Map library. You will find the link in our lecture slides. Check out some of the maps that have been published. Which ones do you find particularly interesting or compelling? Think about story maps as a medium for communication and presentation in organizations. Is it always the best way to present information? Can you think of applications of scenarios where a story map wouldn't necessarily be the best deliverable? Can story maps replace slide decks? Or dashboards? Discuss.
