Part I: Introductory Paragraph
The widespread use of digital communication has surely transformed how we communicate, exchange information, and develop connections in today's fast-paced and linked society. But the ubiquitous presence of social media and the emergence of constant connectivity have sparked worries about the possible harm to mental health. This is where I will make the case that our mental health suffers when we rely too much on digital communication tools, especially social media, which causes stress, anxiety, and a loss of genuine connection. I will describe the various ways that excessive digital communication can negatively impact mental health and disturb the well-being of individuals and society as a whole, building on ideas from chapters 5 and 6 of our textbook as well as lessons from weeks 4 and 5.
Part II: Annotated Bibliography
Twenge, J. M., Campbell, W. K., & Campbell, S. M. (2018). "Associations between screen time and lower psychological well-being among children and adolescents: Evidence from a population-based study." Preventive Medicine Reports, 12, 271-283. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.pmedr.2018.10.003 This study investigates the relationships between screen time, including social media use and kids' and teens' psychological health. Emphasizing the potential effect of excessive digital engagement on mental health, the findings show a negative association between higher amounts of screen time and lower psychological well-being. I'll use this data to back up my claim that more people are communicating digitally, especially younger people, which could lead to mental health issues.
Primack, B. A., Shensa, A., Sidani, J. E., Whaite, E. O., Lin, L. Y., Colditz, J. B., ... & Colditz, J. B. (2017). "Social media use and perceived social isolation among young adults in the U.S." American Journal of Preventive Medicine, 53(1), 1-8. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.amepre.2017.01.010 The use of social media and young adults' perceptions of social isolation are examined in this study. Increased usage of social media is significantly correlated with greater experiences of social isolation, according to the research. I want to emphasize in my presentation the link between overuse of digital communication and the breakdown of real social ties, as well as the possible negative impact on mental health. This evidence will help me do just that.
Livingstone, S. (2018). iGen: why today’s super-connected kids are growing up less rebellious, more tolerant, less happy–and completely unprepared for adulthood. https://doi.org/10.1080/17482798.2017.1417091 Livingstone's work offers a thorough examination of how technology, especially social media and smartphones, affects the "iGen" generation. Livingstone explores the links between rising screen time and declining trends in youth mental health metrics by drawing on an abundance of data and research. This source will give me a more comprehensive historical and cultural backdrop, which will strengthen my case in the PowerPoint presentation.
