***** SIMPLE OBJECT CHOSEN: A MAGNET*****

Anthropology Analysis of the 5 Traits of Culture for a simple object in US Culture Today

NUMBER YOUR ANSWERS.      Use complete sentences.     DOUBLE-SPACE.

GOAL: The aim of this first paper is to Analyze using Anthropology terms & concepts. In this paper, Analysis uses the concept of the 5 main traits of Culture explained in UNIT 1, Week 2, Section 2. To Analyze, you need to choose one specific, simple, common object found in US Culture today & Objectively Analyze it using the 5 main characteristics of Culture that exist in all Cultures.

INSTRUCTIONS: Write an up-loadable document. Number your answers, but DO NOT include the questions.

This is an Analytical Essay. It is NOT a research paper. You are showing that you understand the 5 traits of Culture well enough to Analyze a simple object IN YOUR OWN WORDS. There should be no research. There certainly should be no quotes! Please review the 'Academic Dishonesty Policy' link in the Introduction if you are confused about quotations, etc.

Analyze a SIMPLE, specific object commonly found in US Culture today. Explain how it’s 1) learned about by individuals in the US Culture, 2) shared throughout all the US, 3) based on symbols, 4) integrated with other things in US culture & 5) changed/is changing.

Don’t give opinion. Don’t compare to other cultures, subjects, etc. Don’t repeat answers.

Do not use topics already analyzed in class material or PowerPoints, like knitting needles, S hooks, kites, etc. Do not use a similar topic. A crochet hook is too similar. The best approach is use something specific &   SIMPLE . Do not not a whole category, like hats; or an object with lots of parts, like a bicycle; or a complex object, like a cell phone. These Paper 1 Guidelines may help in choosing an appropriate object.

OBJECT CHOSEN: A MAGNET

PART 1: DESCRIPTION   This part is worth 8 points, 2 points each.

1.  Name one specific, common, simple object/thing/item found in the US culture today. Precisely name the thing. Analyze this material thing. Do not switch to use of the thing. Use the thing itself for all answers.

2.  Clearly describe the object. Use brief, specific details. Pretend you’re describing it to a stranger. ‘It’s big’ is not specific; use specific details, like dimensions, size, color, contour, what it’s made of, weight, etc. BE SPECIFIC. If you’re description is too long, it’s probably too complex a topic

3.  Precisely explain the exact purpose this thing serves on a daily basis in US culture today. Again, be specific. ‘It cleans things’ is too general. Think of the exactly what the purpose of the object is. Don’t just describe its use, explain  its  PURPOSE . If this answer is too short, it’s probably not precise enough.

4.  Relate a specific, detailed example of the item in your life recently. Use details; a date, an exact time, name where you were, etc. ‘I used this yesterday’ is too general. BE SPECIFIC.

PART 2: OBJECTIVE ANTHROPOLOGY ANALYSIS This part is worth 15 points, 3 points each.

1.  Describe an example of how someone learns about this thing. BE SPECIFIC, use individuals, give their names. Say exactly who is teaching & who learns. Mention when, where, etc. this object was explained for the first time. Use details. You may use a real example or make one up, but be specific. ‘People learn about this when they’re little’ describes nothing; name the person, give an age, use a date, include details. Be Specific. Be careful: don’t describe learning how to use the object. Describe learning about the item itself, what the object is.

2.  Specifically explain that the thing is shared throughout the entire US. Name TWO different places in the US where this object is found. Name actual places, give location details, street names, addresses, people’s homes; be precise. ‘They have it in Maine’ is totally non-specific. Make up & name TWO totally different specific places in 2 completely separate parts of the US where one would find this thing.

3.  Describe how this object is integrated with other things in US culture. Use TWO specific examples of things in US culture your object is connected to. Explain exactly how each example is interconnected with your object.  Use descriptive details. Precisely connect your object with 2 other things in US Culture. Be specific. This is not explaining alternative uses. Describe integration: an S hook is connected with a hammock.

4.  Analyze the symbolism of this thing. Explain how the object symbolizes something other than the actual thing itself or the purpose it serves. Connect this symbolism to the larger US culture. Make an argument that the symbolism you explain is part of the overall ideas, values, etc. of US Culture. For instance, the flag symbolizes the nation’s values is way too general. A citronella anti-bug candle, for example, symbolizes leisure time outside in our yards & how US Culture emphasizes comfort & control of our environment, even trying to control ‘Nature’.

5.  Describe how this object has changed over time in US history. This is NOT researching & describing the origin from 2000 years ago somewhere else in the World... You need to describe the object a. before & b. after the change. Describe exactly what changed. c. Then think of what led to the change. Explain why the change from a. to b. may have happened. Again, this isn’t the item’s history or origin. Its change in the US Culture.

PART 3: SUBJECTIVE OPINION             This part is worth 2 points

Describe your favorite thing about this object. This is your opinion, so have fun.

a. Describe something you like about this object from US culture. For instance I love knitting needles, they remind me of my grandma & how she made so many knitted things!

b. Explain why it’s your favorite part. So, like, it’s my favorite part because now make lots of things with my needles & give them to loved ones, just like she did. Use opinion, but be specific!

DOUBLE-SPACE, number your answers, but do NOT include the questions. Use complete sentences. You can write 750-1250 words. Please don’t go over that! There will be a tally of writing/spelling mistakes. I’ll put that in comments on the grading rubric.  If there are more than 10 mistakes, use the writing center for paper 2. I do not accept late submissions. If you have questions, need clarification or guidance, CALL. My number is 269-567-5283. Leave a message. Include your name, a little about your questions & any restrictions on calling back, like, not after 10 pm, etc. I WILL call get back to you. I prefer talking to texting if it’s a complex inquiry.
