Relationship of Mothers' Mental and Physical Health to Characteristics of Mothers and Their Children with Developmental Disabilities

1. Research problems and questions The research question in this paper is, is there a relationship between the mother's mental and physical health obtained

from their characteristics and their children's development with a disability? The paper's null hypothesis is that there is a positive relationship between mothers with mental and physical disabilities to the development of their kids. 2. Finding and using existing knowledge

From the empirical; research conducted by different scholars over time proves that mothers and caregivers of children with developmental disabilities stand at significant risk of developing poor physical and mental health. According to Kahr Nilsson, et al, (2019), this can be attributed to factors such as the sleeping quality of mothers. Researchers are still exploring the field to develop more findings that could be used to help such mothers.

3. Focused research questions and research hypothesis

This paper aims to compare and identify the relationship between maternal characteristics such as caregiving stress, quality of sleep, and other variables in the social demographic avenues with a child's characteristics, such as the problems they have in sleeping and their sleeping behavior. Between mothers of other mental and physical health and those with worse mental and physical health, so ac to find the connection between mothers'

physical and mental health with their school-age children with developmental disabilities. 4. Research methods

The result was conducted by collecting samples of 40 mothers with developmental disabilities to establish the correlations. The mothers were presented with

questionnaires to fill. The questionnaires included the pitsbugsleep quality index, zarit burden interview, and the epidemiology study depression scale center. These tools were utilized in the questionnaire presented to the mothers to come up with conclusive results.

5. Sampling issues and options

A convenient sample of mothers with school-aged children between the ages of 6 to 12 with developmental disabilities was identified and used in a correlation research design. Three sets of inclusion criteria were used to determine the participants in the research. These qualities were; the mothers were supposed to be 21 years old or above the age and they were supposed to be the primary caregivers and self-identified, which dictates that the mothers were supposed to be responsible for giving the best care for their children with developmental disabilities and thirdly, the participants were supposed to have the ability to read, write and speak fluent English. More so, there were exclusion criteria for mothers to participate in the research, including pregnant mothers, mothers who work in different shifts at their place of employment. These mothers had previously been diagnosed with a sleeping disorder and those with severe mental disorder and bipolar disorder. According to Kahr Nilsson, et al, (2019), there was the utilization of several strategies to get the participants. There was the distribution of brochures and flyers to different medical institutions in the United States' urban cities, childcare facilities, and nonprofit organizations. The healthcare providers in those areas made referrals for the participant. More so, there was the use of snowball sampling technique for the mothers and caregivers that were referring fellow mother who might have qualified for the research

6. Measurement

The first measurement was on sleep quality. There was the utilization of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index in measuring the perceived sleep quality of mothers

((PSQI). The technique uses 19 self-rated measures to assess sleep quality and disturbance through the past one month period. According to Kahr Nilsson, et al, (2019), the strategy utilizes 19 questions that are separated into seven components on a scale of up to 3, combined with a score ranging from 0 to 21. If the score represents more than 5, it signifies low sleep quality. The technique has a reliability of 0.89 and a good validity score. This is the most common technique used to research mothers of children suffering from a developmental disorder The second measure that was used is caregiving stress. In this case, caregiving stress was measured by utilizing the Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI). This technique utilizes 22 questions designed to measure individuals with b characteristics of Alzheimer's disease. Since the technique was not intended for this measure, it was modified by replacing some words like "your relative" with "your child" the score on the responses ranged from 0 to 4. The technique also presented good reliability and convergent validity between mothers of children who have dementia, (Kahr Nilsson, et al, 2019). Relationship quality is the measure of the third that was used in this research. In this case, mothers who are already married and those in a relationship filled Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS). This technique utilizes the questionnaire with 32 self-administered questions. The items were aimed at evaluating the quality of the couple's relationship. The questions were arranged basing on the Likert scale, where the score ranged from 0 to 151. Where a higher score signifies a higher satisfaction. The technique has a reliability score of 0.96. For a long time, the technique has been used to determine the relationship between families with children suffering from developmental disorders.

7. Data acquisition

The Georgia state university approved the research. In this case, the participants started the recruitment process between October 12, 2014, to march 26, 2015.

The research participants were referred contacted the principal investigator, and those who were willing to volunteer in the research also conducted the principal investigator. The moment the mothers who had volu8nteerd to participate in the research and had met the requirements were identified. A meeting at a convenient location was organized. The mothers wrote a consent agreement where the information about the mother and child's demography was provided. Simultaneously, the mothers filled the questionnaires with a score of above 16 in the CES-D, signifying that the mother might be a beneficiary of the research and requires further evaluation. The meeting was designed to take between 45-60 minutes. After the completion of the study, the participants were gifted with $10 worth of the gift, (Kahr Nilsson, et al, 2019).

9. Analyzing data

For this situation, information was dissected utilizing the SPSS form 22.0 and SAS adaptation 9.3. The utilization of enlightening measurements summed up the

examination of discoveries, factors, and missing information. In the measurable examination, the missing information was thought to be moment and therefore disregarded aimlessly. To decide the maternal contrasts among moms and youngsters with better mental and actual wellbeing well-being, those with more regrettable mental and actual wellbeing well-being were assessed utilizing the possibility table. In the examination, the dichotomized proportions of burdensome side effects were the reliable variable. Only those variables that through and through shifted between bundles in the bivariate vital backslide examination were associated with the last determined backslide models

10. Disseminating research findings

The research involved 46 mothers who qualified for the test. O0ut of the 46, two were unable to complete the research since there was a loss of contact with the principal investigator. Three did not meet the inclusion criteria; one pulled out of the research after the screening was done while the remaining 40 mothers completed the research process. The results of the research were based on the 40 mothers who completed the research. It was discovered that there was a positive correlation between mothers' physical and mental health to their children that were suffering from a mental disorder. Mothers with such kids tended to have poor relationships, low sleep quality, and stress while caregiving, whereas the mothers with children without the developmental disorder were performing well, (Kahr Nilsson, et al, 2019).
