Patient-centered care and effective communication is key in developing a collaborative relationship with patients and is especially important in the care of vulnerable patients. Homeless people are a vulnerable population that is underserved, medically disadvantaged, and poverty-stricken, making them increasingly susceptible to health problems and worse health outcomes. Homelessness remains a prevalent, pervasive public health issue in the United States despite years of legal and policy interventions offering short- and long-term solutions (Hodge Jr., DiPietro, & Horton-Newell, 2017). Many homeless individuals lack resources to enhance their ability to maintain and sustain health and well-being. Therefore, homeless people have high rates of chronic disease and acute illnesses, often associated with, or exacerbated by, their living situations (Morrison,2009). A considerable amount of published research on the health status and conditions of homeless persons also shows that they have a broad range of mental health and substance use needs (SAMHSA, 2011). They lack healthy lifestyles and are distrustful of the health system and health care providers, thus resulting in late-stage seeking to treat for chronic conditions. According to a study conducted by Whitney (2013), most homeless people have a very strong aversion to medical care. This is often based on previous failed or disparaging encounters in the health system, including misdiagnosis, iatrogenesis, and discrimination, leading to both fear and loathing of professional health care.  Increased exposure to violence, malnutrition, extreme weather, and criminal charges are additional risk factors for homeless persons, contributing to poor health outcomes and premature death. Services critical to homeless persons, including adult dental care, case management, and housing support are needed. Additionally communities need to increase mental health and substance abuse treatment capacity, change laws that criminalize mental illness and addiction, and prioritize permanent and supportive housing over emergency shelters to help improve their quality of life (Hodge Jr., DiPietro, & Horton-Newell, 2017). Community- Based Participatory Research (CBPR) is known to be an effective research process when conducting research with members of vulnerable populations. This approach is beneficial because the vulnerable populations being researched are working alongside researchers. CBPR allows vulnerable populations to be empowered. Homeless persons can advocate for increase access to health care, housing, and support for mental health and substance abuse concerns. Voicing their concerns, ideas for change and sharing their personal experiences can help further elicit change in their community. Health disparities and inequities in the homeless population can benefit the project's success because many of them may be motivated for change because they want consistent food and housing security, access to health care, and improved quality of life. However, the project’s success can be hindered by the distrusting mindset of the homeless population. They may have lost hope or are unmotivated because of their past negative experiences with medical professionals. Disadvantages of CBPR also include increased time to develop trusting relationships with community members, or exclusion of a vast amount of members of the vulnerable population, to adequately represent the population. Therefore results may not be inclusive of the majority of the vulnerable population.  Although the vulnerable share characteristics making them vulnerable to health concerns, they remain unique. Researchers should be mindful of this when conducting community-based participatory research. Nonetheless, CBPR is crucial in addressing health disparities in socially disadvantaged population groups and an ideal way to fight for health equity.                                                                        References  D.S. Week 6 Assignment 2

Change is inevitable. If there is anything unchanging and steadfast, it is change itself. Organizations that cannot manage to come up with strategic measures to cope up with the changes taking place in their industries are doomed to fail. The purpose of this task is to discuss Walmart's internal and external environments, a retail company that deals with the distribution of consumer-based products.

General Environment

Businesses are affected by various factors. Collectively, these factors form a global business environment. Every business must find a way to transact and interact with its global climate because it has a direct relationship with the company. The failure or success of any company is dependent on the nature of its interaction with the general business environment (Barroso, Sanguino & Alam, 2017). The global climate imposes various types of restrictions or opportunities for businesses. There is little that a business can do to influence the global environment. Thus, the company must identify with the context in which it operates and devises strategies for handling the forces of its inclusive environment.

Segment 1

As a retail company, Walmart faces several factors that determine the success of the company. The company has managed to withstand several potential threats arising from legal, ecological, technological, sociocultural, economic, and political elements of its business. The success of the business depends on the critical evaluation of these factors. Unfortunately, these factors change depending on time or other circumstances. The changes can present more threats or opportunities for the company (Hitt, Ireland & Hoskisson, 2016). For the company to succeed, it should protect itself from the risks and take advantage of the opportunities and exploit them.

There are two factors from the global environment that have the most significant influence on the performance of Walmart. The first factor is political influence. The company must consider several political factors in the retail market. These factors mostly have to do with government policies. Additionally, the company must deal with substantial pressure from interest groups (Alam, 2017). Notably, the company must battle political issues to do with political stability, political support for globalization, and political pressure to increase the wages and salaries paid to employees.

The second factor from the general environment that the company is currently grappling with is economic factors. Walmart is now under considerable pressure arising from economic changes. Such economic changes affect the revenues of the company. The economic factors that Walmart must deal with include the stability of leading economies, the continued growth of the economics of developing countries, and the decrease in unemployment in the USA. These economic factors mean that the company should look for strategies of exploiting the opportunities in first-world countries and exploiting the opportunities that emerge in developing countries. From a strategic point of view, the company should mostly find ways of using opportunities in fast-growing economies of developing countries that tend to have a high demand for goods that are provided by retail companies (Hitt, Ireland & Hoskisson, 2016).

The political factors of any given country primarily affect the businesses operating therein. Political factors encompass issues such as the foreign policy of the government, philosophy, political stability, military and defense policy, level of bureaucracy, and the government's image both locally and internationally (Barroso, Sanguino & Alam, 2017). For instance, in some countries that Walmart operates in, the governments try to restrict the growth of multinational companies in the market and will do anything within their power to ensure that the business operations of the company are limited. Similarly, government policies allow for licensing that is liberal, the liberal importation or exportation of goods and services, the magnitude of business operations, and the inflow of technology and foreign capital. The stance of the government on matters such as globalization also affects the rate of growth of a company such as Walmart.

There are numerous political issues that Walmart must deal with. For instance, there are countries that the company wishes to invest in, but they are not politically stable. The company would not dare invest in such countries even if there are promising opportunities because the political climate may change and disrupt business operations. For instance, the impeachment of a president may adversely affect the actions of the company. Secondly, some countries dictate the minimum amount of wages that should be paid to workers. The number of revenues that the company gets from some establishments may not be enough to cover the number of payments that the government has set up (Hitt, Ireland & Hoskisson, 2016).

Further, some countries do not have proper or effective intellectual property laws. Due to this, very few entrepreneurs would be willing to invest in Walmart. Finally, some states or countries have unfavorable tax laws that discourage companies such as Walmart from investing there.

Segment 2

The second general environment factor that Walmart must deal with is economic issues. For instance, the company sees new opportunities in developing countries, but they are hesitant to invest in unfavorable government regimes, high taxation rates, foreign exchange rates, and high inflation rates. Even in countries where the company has established itself, it has to deal with factors such as the ghost of gross domestic product, the current stage of the economic cycle, high unemployment rates, the demand by employees for higher wages and salaries, and interest rates (Hitt, Ireland & Hoskisson, 2016). These factors collectively affect the company's ability to take advantage of new investment opportunities and change the aggregate demand of the company.

Five Forces of Competition

Porter's Five Forces framework is a model that investigates and identifies the competitive forces that shape any given industry and shape its strengths and weaknesses. An analysis of the five factors helps an organization to understand the structure of the industry and develop a corporate strategy. The five Porter forces are competition, the probability of new entrants into the market, the power placed in the hands of suppliers, the power of customers, and the threat that the organization faces from substitute products. The most significant Porter's five forces regarding Walmart Inc. are competitive rivals and the power of customers,

Force 1

Rivalry in the retail industry is healthy. Numerous companies of different sizes offer the same products and services that Walmart offers. The rival companies are many in number, and some seem to be more aggressive than Walmart. Thus, Walmart faces stiff competition from rivals in the external environment. According to Porter's five forces model, a considerable number of competitors make the rivalry in the industry too strong to cope with (Barroso, Sanguino & Alam, 2017). Worse still, these competitors are using different approaches from the ones that Walmart has been using. For the company to remain competitive, it must become more aggressive. Over the last few years, the company has shown signs that it is putting deliberate efforts to grow and remain a global leader in the retail industry.

Force 2

The second factor from Porter's five forces model is the power of customers or buyers. Based on the five forces model, the large population of customers makes it difficult for Walmart to impose significant pressure on other retailers. Walmart is currently experiencing challenges due to the large population of buyers, the high diversity of customers, and the small percentage of loyal individual buyers. The senior community and diversity of buyers would be a weak force for Walmart. Worse still, the individual buyers who appear to be fully loyal to the retail company have a small impact on the company's global revenues.

Future Improvements

There are several strategies that Walmart should implement to combat these two forces that appear to be working against its progress. One of these strategies is investing in an online platform that would allow customers to shop from the comfortability of their homes or offices. The company should overhaul its current website and focus more on e-commerce, as opposed to brick-and-mortar establishments. This will ensure that customers get a more personalized service based on their unique shopping behaviors (Alam, 2017). Secondly, Walmart should consider acquiring some of its competitors. This is mainly for the small ones that have not yet received a significant market share. This will strengthen the customer base of the company and reduce rivalry.

Greatest External Threat

The most significant external threat the Walmart is currently facing is the emergence of new competitors threatening to eat into the company's market share. These companies are coming up with better prices and more innovative ways of serving their customers. If this trend continues, the company is likely to lose its customers and market share. The implication of this is that the company will become less dominant in the retail industry, and revenues will take a nosedive (Hitt, Ireland & Hoskisson, 2016). The company has been trying to acquire some of its rivals and coming up with more innovative ways of meeting the needs of its customers, such as revamping its online platform to include some of the features that customers would wish to see.

Greatest Opportunity

The most significant opportunity for Walmart is that the company is trying to patent an online grocery delivery service like Tinder, the dating app. If the company manages to get this patent, its sales are likely to grow by approximated 23% (Hitt, Ireland & Hoskisson, 2016). This retail giant is also planning to acquire other online retailers. If this plan goes through, the company will manage to grow and bolster its sales as well as market share.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Walmart has many strengths and weaknesses. One of the advantages is that the company is the largest retailer in the world. Its power over competitors and suppliers and the market is unmatched. The other strength of the company is an international presence. Walmart's weaknesses are; poor conditions and treatment of employees, gender discrimination, small profit margins, and its broad span of control (Barroso, Sanguino & Alam, 2017).

Strategy or Tactic

There are several strategies that Walmart is using to ensure that it remains a market leader. One of these strategies is low pricing. The company provides that it sells its products at low prices to attract many customers and achieve a high sales volume. The second strategy is acquiring companies such as Whole Foods (Hitt, Ireland & Hoskisson, 2016). This will help to increase the physical presence of the company and enable it to compete with companies such as Amazon.

Resources, Capabilities, and Core Competencies

Walmart has many resources, capabilities, and core competencies. For instance, the company has an inventory management system that has been set up for high efficiency. Walmart also has a substantial brand value compared to its competitors. Further, the company's organizational size allows it to have durable bargaining power (Alam, 2017). Another useful resource that Walmart has is a large workforce that is motivated and always ready to serve the company's customers with dedication. Finally, Walmart has a vast international supply chain.

It is an activity that has proven to be fully active within the market. The practice has enabled the company to expand in other markets as the globalization process opens the market in a positive way. The method of integration allows the company to adopt marketing strategies that are fully effective in the expansion of the company within the competitive industry (Ramos, 2015). The company is keen on the adoption of big data, which is an essential issue of care that promotes the company to be fully capable in terms of operations (Ramos, 2015). The management of big data, such as inventories, becomes easy for the company through big data. It is an initiative that the administration is keen on adopting based on the positive industrial impacts that the activity has in the interest of the company. The process is fully adequate as it facilitates the company to continue being dominant within the market. The increase in general revenue is a critical function that can be associated with the expansion of the company.

Industrial Organization Model

The company is keen on adopting a model that facilitates the smooth operations and delegation of duty among employees, which is a measure that promotes the company to be fully competent within the market. The company applies a hierarchical organizational structure that has proven to be highly active within the market. The model that the company employs has two primary features that play a crucial role in ensuring that the models are fully capable (Heracleous, 2016). The hierarchical function entails the use of the vertical command lines that prove to be effective in the communication of the company. It facilitates the secure delegation of duty. The top management to middle management and junior management levels is a crucial matter of concern that is quite clear. On the other hand, function-based involves a set of employees performing specific duties.

Resource-Based Model

The application of a resource-based model is part of the organizational measure that the company might put under consideration. The model focuses on the resources to be key to company performances. It is a critical practice that emphasizes that the company’s effectiveness could be improved using the model. The model is widely preferred based on the creation of competitive advantage (Heracleous, 2016). However, the hierarchical model that the company applies has enabled the company to retain productivity within the market, which is a crucial matter of concern that facilitates the company to remain productive within the market despite the competitive nature of the company positively. Ideally, the use of the traditional model is a critical factor of concern that needs to be appropriately addressed, which is a vital factor of interest in this case.

Vision

The vision of the company is a key factor that pushes the company to increase its products within the competitive market. “Be the destination for customers to save money, no matter how they want to shop.” The vision of the company is focused on making the company a leading market player who is a key aspect that leads to the increased productivity of the company within the market (Abrahams, 2019). It echoes the underlying reasons that lead to the increase of the company desire and creating it a better position as a leading retailer within the market.

Mission

The mission of the company is focused on the needs of the customer. “to save people money so they can live better.” The purpose reflects an apparent reason as to why the company has remained productive within the market in a positive way.

Stakeholders

The shareholders are the main stakeholders of the company that plays an essential role in terms of capital allocation, which is a key matter of concern. The activity involves the creation of a better skeptic that consists of the application of better frameworks that are focused on the nature of better operational skeptics. The customers are also the key stakeholders of the company, which is a crucial factor of concern that has positive implications (Ruecker, 2017). Today, the success of the company within the market is a crucial factor that is associated with the operational skeptics that involve the positive company relations that it enjoys with the market. The other set of stakeholders includes the employees, which is an elemental factor of concern that enables the company to be fully productive in terms of operations.

In summary, the paper discusses the strategic competitiveness and management of the company. Globalization is an action that has positively played for the company. The process has enabled the company to expand in various markets across the globe. It is an activity that has proven to be fully competent within the market. The application of a resource-based model is part of the organizational measure that the company might put under consideration. The model focuses on the resources to be key to company performances. Web sources are accessed through an internet browser.

Home Pages A home page loads when typing a standard web address. For instance, typing Google.com into any web browser will take you to Google’s home page.

Cite a homepage when using information from a news thread, image, or basic piece of information on a company’s website. Find Tips Here.

Specific Web Pages If using any web page other than the home page, include the specific page title and direct link (when possible) in the Source List entry.

If the assignment used multiple web pages from the same source, create separate Source List entries (if the title and/or web address is different).

Effective Internet Links When sharing a link to an article with your instructor and classmates, start with a brief summary of the article and why you chose to share it.

Share vs. URL Options Cutting and pasting the URL (web address) from your browser may not allow others to view your source. This makes it hard for people to engage with the content you used.

To avoid this problem, look for a “share” option and choose that when possible. Always test your link(s) before submitting.

If you cannot properly share the link, include the article/source as an attachment. Interested classmates and your professor can reference the article shared as an attachment. Find tips here.

Credit for Web Sources

Charts, images, and tables should be centered horizontally on the page and should be followed by an in-text citation. Design your page and place a citation below the chart, image, or table. When referring to the chart, image, or table in the body of the assignment, use the citation.

Do not include a chart, image, or table without introducing it in the assignment and explaining why it is necessary.

On your Source List, provide the following details of the visual:

· Author’s name (if created by you, provide your name).

· Date (if created by you, provide the year).

· Type (Chart, Image, or Table).

· How to find it (link or other information; see Source List section for additional details).

(Harvey, 1, p. 16)

In the example, the author is Harvey, the source list number is 1, and the page number where this information can be found is page 16.

Multiple Sources (Synthesizing) Synthesizing is the use of multiple sources in one paraphrased sentence or paragraph to make a strong point. While this is normally done in advanced writing, it could be useful for any writing where you use more than one source. Find tips here.

The key is clarity. If you paraphrase multiple sources in the same sentence (or paragraph if most of the information contained in the paragraph is paraphrased), you should include each source in the citation. Separate sources using semi-colons (;) and create the citation in the normal style that you would for using only one source (Name, Source Number).

 Example SYNTHESIZED IN-TEXT CITATION

(Harvey, 1; Buchanan, 2)

In the example, the authors Harvey and Buchanan were paraphrased to help the student make a strong point. Harvey is the first source on the Source List, and Buchanan is the second source on the Source List.

Advanced Methods Some assignments require more advanced techniques. If necessary, these guidelines help with special case scenarios.

Strayer University Writing Standards 9

Substitution and Ellipsis Omitting unnecessary information from a direct quotation is often required. To omit information, delete the unnecessary information and replace it with an ellipsis inside of square brackets, like this: […]. Find tips here.

There are times when a quality source has made a mistake, but you still value the information that the source provides. To solve this issue, change elements of the source (noting what additions or changes were required). When changing elements within a direct quotation, delete the original information and surround the new wording or spelling with square brackets, like this: “[W]riting”.

The bracket here shows that the original source may have misspelled “writing” or that the “W” has been capitalized and was lowercase in the source material.

NOTE: Ellipsis and square brackets cannot be used in paraphrased source material.

 Example ORIGINAL SOURCE

“Writing at a college level requires informed research.”

ELLIPSIS

Harvey wrote that writing “at a college level requires […] research” (1).

SUBSTITUTION

Many authors agree that “[w]riting at an [under- graduate] college level requires informed re- search” (1).

Footnotes and Additional Content Written assignments may benefit from including relevant background information that is not necessarily important for the main body of the assignment.

To include extra secondary evidence or authorial commentary, insert a numeral superscript into the text of the assignment and add the extra evidence or commentary in the footer of the page as a footnote. (Note: Microsoft Word’s “Insert Footnote” function is the preferred method.)

 Example

When writing a paper for higher education,4 it is imperative to research and cite sources (Harvey, 1). This suggestion applies to both undergraduate and graduate students, and it is the first thing that beginning students must internalize.

4 Mathews has pointed out that this suggestion is appropriate for all levels of education, even those outside of university, and is in fact best practices for any form of professional writing (2). However, this paper focuses specifically on writing in college-level education.

Appendices An assignment may require an appendix following the Source List. The appendix is meant to declutter the assignment body or provide relevant supplemental information for the audience.

If there is only one appendix, it is labeled, Appendix. More than one appendix may be required. Label the first appendix Appendix A, the second Appendix B, and so on. Each chart, graphic, or photograph referred to in the body of the assignment requires its own listing in the appendices.

Use descriptive labels in the body of your written assignment to link each chart, graphic, or photograph to its place in the appendices. For example, when referring to a chart found in Appendix B, a student would include (see Appendix B, Cost of Tuition in Secondary Education, 2010-2019) after referring to data drawn from that chart.

Source List The Source List includes all sources used in your assignment. It is a new page added at the end of your assignment. The list gives credit to authors whose work supported your own and should provide enough information so that others can find the source(s) without your help.

Build your Source List as you write.

Type “Sources” at the top of a new page.

Include a numbered list of the sources you used in your paper (the numbers indicate the order in which you used them).

1. Use the number one (1) for the first source used in the paper, the number two (2) for the second source, and so on.

2. Use the same number for a source if you use it multiple times.

Ensure each source includes five parts: author or organization, publication date, title, page number (if needed), and how to find it. If you have trouble finding these details, then re-evaluate the credibility of your source.

Use the browser link for a public webpage.

Use a permalink for a webpage when possible. Find tips here.

Instruct your readers on how to find all sources that do not have a browser link or a permalink.

Separate each Source List element with a period on your Source List.

AUTHOR PUBLICATION DATE TITLE PAGE NO. HOW TO FIND The person(s) who published the source. This can be a single person, a group of people, or an organization. If the source has no author, use “No author” where you would list the author.

The date the source was published. If the source has no publication date, use “No date” where you would list the date.

The title of the source. If the source has no title, use “No title” where you would list the title.

The page number(s) used. If the source has no page numbers, omit this section from your Source List Entry.

Instruct readers how to find all sources. Keep explanations simple and concise, but provide enough information so the source can be located. Note: It is your responsibility to make sure the source can be found.

Week 8 Assignment 3

Write your introduction to this 6-page paper here. Include one (1) paragraph (not more than 6 lines of text) that explains what your paper will discuss. Much of your introduction may be taken from the assignment instructions (in your own words). Read all assignment resources to understand what should be included in your paper. Be sure to review the assignment instructions in Blackboard, the grading rubric, and relevant course announcements to understand the requirements. Do not exceed 6 lines of text in this introduction. There should be no direct quotes in this section. After reading these instructions, replace this blue text with your introduction and change the font color to black.

Business-Level Strategies

Analyze the business-level strategies for the corporation you chose to determine the business-level strategy you think is most important to the long-term success of the firm. You will also need to determine whether or not you judge this to be a good choice (Note: in this step you need to choose and write about only one (1) business-level strategy from the text book (not Google). Hint: See Figure 4.1 in the textbook. Include a thorough justification for your choice that is backed by facts and sound judgement. For background, be sure to research and explain the industry in which your selected corporation operates. You could also briefly (1 – 2 sentences) define the business-level strategy (cite your sources) you are writing about using the textbook/Learn, as an introduction to your analysis. Read Chapter 4 in the course textbook. Review the Week 4 Learn Reading for supporting content. Your response here should demonstrate that you understand the key concepts regarding the selected business-level strategy and can apply them to a real-world corporation. Keep in mind that this is a 6-page paper and as such your analysis should thoroughly address the concepts discussed in the course. Avoid unsubstantiated statements, extended introductory commentary, direct quotes, and unrelated content. Strive for about 1 ½ - 2 pages of well-constructed, in-depth analysis in this section.

In this section, you could research and identify the core competencies your chosen firm uses to implement its business-level strategies and discuss their effectiveness. You could also demonstrate from your research how the firm uses its core competencies to create and sell its products in the marketplace. Consider the actions & choices your firm has made to compete in individual product markets. Review Chapters 4-9 for specifics on the business-level strategies. Your response should clearly identify the one business-level strategy from the textbook that you think is most important to the long-term success of the corporation. Your response must also include a clearly stated and justified judgement on whether that strategy is a good choice. Include enough content and depth to demonstrate a thorough analysis of your selected corporation’s business-level strategy. Remember that this is a 6-page paper and as such, you will need to dig deep. After reading these instructions, replace this blue text with your analysis and change the font color to black.

Corporate-Level Strategies

Analyze the corporate-level strategies for the corporation you chose to determine the corporate-level strategy you think is most important to the long-term success of the firm. You will also need to determine whether or not you judge this to be a good choice. (Note: in this step you need to choose and write about only one (1) corporate-level strategy from the text book (not Google). Hint: See chapter 6 in the textbook. Include a thorough justification for your choice that is backed by facts and sound judgement. You could also briefly (1 – 2 sentences) define the corporate-level strategy (cite your sources) you are writing about using the textbook/Learn, as an introduction to your analysis. Read Chapter 6 in the course textbook. Review the Week 6 Learn Reading for supporting content. Your response here should demonstrate that you understand the key concepts regarding the selected corporate-level strategy and can apply them to a real-world corporation.

Your response should clearly identify the one corporate-level strategy from the textbook that you think is most important to the long-term success of the corporation. Your response must also include a clearly stated and justified judgement on whether that strategy is a good choice. Include enough content and depth to demonstrate a thorough analysis of your selected corporation’s corporate-level strategy. Remember that this is a 6-page paper and as such, you will need to dig deep. After reading these instructions, replace this blue text with your analysis and change the font color to black.

Competitive Environment

Analyze the competitive environment to determine the corporation's most significant competitor (this will require research outside of the course material). Compare their strategies at each level and evaluate which company you think is most likely to be successful in the long term. Justify your choice. Hint: read chapters 1 - 10 in the course textbook as they provide a solid background for this section. Review the Week 1 - 8 Learn Readings for supporting content. Remember that this is a 6-page paper and requires a thorough competitive analysis. Strive for about a 1 ½ - 2 pages of well-constructed, in-depth analysis in this section. Cite your sources and avoid the use of direct quotes. After reading these instructions, replace this blue text with your analysis and change the font color to black.

Market Cycles

Determine whether your choice from Question 3 (Competitive Environment section above) would differ in slow-cycle and fast-cycle markets. It would be a good idea to briefly explain what the slow-cycle and fast-cycle markets are from the textbook (cite your sources) as a short introduction to your determination. Hint: read Chapter 5 in the course textbook. Remember that this is a 6-page paper and therefore each section requires a thorough response that demonstrates your understanding of key concepts covered in the course and your ability to apply them to a real-world corporation. Cite your sources and avoid the use of direct quotes. After reading these instructions, replace this blue text with your response and change the font color to black.

The purpose of this discussion is to weigh the pros and cons of the implementation of a Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) health promotion project with the homeless adolescent and young adult vulnerable population. Also, this discussion will consider the benefits of the actions of this vulnerable population in a CBPR health promotion project and how their active role is important. Lastly, this discussion post will examine this vulnerable population’s health disparities and health inequities on the ability of a program to be successful.

Homeless adolescents and young adults depend on shelters, food banks, and community clinics as their health assets to optimize their health. Schooling, which includes nurses, free meals, shelter, and education, can increase this vulnerable population’s health promotion. This vulnerable population’s health problems start with the lack of basic needs such as food, shelter, and health education. This sets this population up to fail at health promotion. Unfortunately, as Podschun (1993) and Woan et al. (2013) discuss in their studies, this population’s health problems also stem from risky behaviors such as drug use, needle sharing, decreased condom use, and increased number of sexual partners. The risky behaviors accompanied by limited available access to health care leaves this population at risk for disease, illness, and unhealthy habits. This population can not access health care due to cost, feeling judged, having a lack of trust with providers, and not having time off from work to seek care (Woan et al., 2013). Podschun (1993) reviewed multiple studies that confirmed this vulnerable population engaged in risky behaviors that set themselves up for health problems such as HIV. However, even with lack of education, lack of healthcare and increased risks of developing diseases, homeless adolescents and young adults are resilient. They learn to live with minimum resources, become empowered to heal with the least amount of resources, and learn from other teen homeless role models on how to live their best health promoting life. Teen outreach programs provide a means to improve the homeless adolescent and young adult’s lives. These programs provide resources, education, and interventions to increase this vulnerable population’s health promotion and disease prevention.

The CBPR is one way to promote and increase health promotion in this vulnerable population’s community. This research method includes participants from this vulnerable community to have a voice in the needed social changes in their community. The goal of these changes is to increase health promotion, empower, and increase knowledge in this vulnerable population. As Pender et al., (2015) states, CBPR will only be successful if through community analysis, the community must be thoroughly involved. This type of research will fail if it does not include the community's input. Wallerstein and Duran (2010) discuss that CBPR will be most successful if the community members decide on the intervention, the community members are valued, the community’s cultural values and beliefs are respected, and there is a concrete plan when grant funding ends.

As we consider the implementation of a Community-Based Participatory Research health promotion project with the homeless adolescents and young adults, as future Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs), we must examine the pros and cons. The homeless adolescents and young adults have shown empowerment, motivation, and continued support through teen outreach programs. The “Teen Peer Outreach-Street Work Project” is one intervention that could be from a Community Based Participatory Research health promotion project. This vulnerable population might consider this intervention as a means to increase their health promotion. The program is based on teen homeless participants becoming educators for other young adolescents and young adults. This provides a sense of cultural respect. The students and the educators share a common culture and the educators know how the students feel (Podschun, 1993). Due to a high rate of low literacy skills, the program used HIV learning materials with “high-impact coloration, photographs, and symbols” (Podschun, 1993). The pros to this health promotion project is that the vulnerable population decided on the intervention. This group decided that homeless teens would become more empowered and more eager to learn if fellow homeless teens taught them. The group was valued and the program is based on homeless teens teaching other homeless teens. The program incorporated this population’s language and made teaching materials based on their literacy level. As a result of the community population being involved, respected, listened to and valued, this study determined they could educate 1,000 homeless teens in one year (Podschun, 1993).

The cons of CBPR health promotion projects must be considered when assessing how long programs can maintain productivity. These teen programs need continued participants to be active in their roles as educators. This requires younger homeless children stepping up and being the next teen educator or teens that were students to become educators. If this cycle stops, this program will lack valuable educators. Another con comes from grant funding. If these teen programs are based on grant funding, will the community educators continue these programs without funding?  This program might face the challenge of sustainability. As Wallerstein and Duran (2010) discuss, there needs to be attention placed on the program and resources or a barrier to sustain the intervention will surface. A back up plan must be in place for these crucial programs to stay open. Also, the teens must trust the researchers in these teen outreach programs. If not, they will not return for education, support or to show the researcher what they have learned, or how their health promotion has improved (Wallerstein & Duran, 2010).

The homeless adolescent and young adult’s health disparities and inequities can both hinder and benefit the success of CBPR health promotion projects. There are many different areas that can be researched on the homeless adolescent and young adult population. From poverty to lack of healthcare to lack of health literacy to risky health behaviors, researchers have an array of areas to choose. Researchers might have gratification from their research projects if improvements in health promotion were achieved through their projects. However, this vulnerable population might not have the qualifications for research funding or the means to be researched. For example, per Pender et al. (2015), when setting up screenings for certain populations, the specific population must be taken into consideration. Some populations have an increased or decreased attendance to participate in screenings (Pender et al., 2010). Another reason CBPR health promotion projects might not benefit from researching this population is due to inability to participate. If transportation is necessary to be interviewed, assessed or to go to the project setting, then this population might not be able to participate. This population might be able to do what the researcher wants them to do. They might not have the healthy food choices, ability to exercise, or ability to sleep as directed from the researcher. Also, researchers take on an extra layer of work when researching these vulnerable populations. Vulnerable populations bear watching from different ethical organizations to ensure they are being treated properly and not taken advantage of.

Implementation of a CBPR health promotion project with the homeless adolescent and young adult vulnerable population could improve this population’s health promotion. Continuing the motivation and empowerment from this population and maintaining an active role of its participants would bring more success to adolescent and young adult programs. Due to this vulnerable population’s health disparities and inequities, there are many areas to increase this population’s health promotion and disease prevention. Funding, trust, and continued community involvement will increase the success of these CBPR’s health promotion projects.

Community-Based Participatory Care to Combat Veterans

Student’s name

Combat veterans are a vulnerable group that serves the military in combat zones. This kind of group experiences a lot of challenges when serving, including mental health issues. Even after their services and after returning to their homes, they experience a lot of problems, such as struggling to meet their needs (Westphal& Convoy, 2015). When in service, it means that you are separated from family members, which is often stressful. Mental health problems such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is caused by stress. Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) is an approach used to conduct research involving members of the community. The CBPR project can help identify some of the problems faced by this group. This paper discusses the cons and pros of implementing a Community-Based Participatory Research health promotion project with combat veterans.

Through the implementation of the Community-Based Participatory Research health promotion project, the veteran group can primarily benefit because most healthcare practitioners are willing to collaborate. Nurses who initiate and implement health promotion plans try to work within the cultural context with the involved vulnerable group (Johnson &Koocher, 2017). The practitioners try much to develop and work out plans to engage the combat veterans. Though most of these veterans may seem uninterested, healthcare personnel can understand, recognize, and assess this vulnerable group's importance, thus instigating health promotion plans and services also aimed to support military family wellbeing.

The CBPR health project is aimed at collecting research to improve the lives of different vulnerable groups. An advantage of this research project includes exploring perceptions as well as overall knowledge from the combat veterans. CBPR joins with the community to make a comprehensive research of a vulnerable group, to minimize disparities. As stated above, this group is exposed to a lot of health problems that need attention. With the American generation influenced and defined by military war, more combat veterans qualify for VHA, but fewer are enrolled (Johnson &Koocher, 2017). Healthcare practitioners have no straight impact on combat veterans' maintenance and care. The purpose of the health promotion plan is to address the needs of this vulnerable group because it’s a fact that half of their lives are usually at risk.

Flexibility and awareness are some of the cons of implementing CBPR. As their health lives include more downs than ups, it’s better to know the limits of combat veterans and self-awareness. Some of the things that are likely to make a combat veteran not wanting to participate in this kind of project are the fact that many of them suffer from physical disabilities, like being on a wheelchair due to war injuries, while others are experiencing brain injuries, sprains and strains and so on (Westphal& Convoy, 2015).

Ethical issues can serve as barriers, or cons of implementing the CBPR project. Reason being that combat veterans are mindful of ethical implications. Confidentiality is a factor that this group doesn’t want to endanger, so they stay tight and hold up information. Combat veterans’ ethical practices (personal and professional) are liable on actual submission of private and cultural scruples as well as professional rules (Oster et al. 2019). They are not allowed to share any information outside their job areas, so implementing the health promotion plan to people who often and hardly share information based on their workplaces is hard. Culture can also serve as a con because not every person or combat veteran exhibits cultural beliefs and behavior characteristics.
