· Words that fail to convey lucid meaning and silence that signal confusing/overlapping meanings
· Clothing that suggest rags of poverty
· Feeble and painful strides toward the grave, death
· Tone and themes of depression, waste, disappointment, disillusion, and death
Types of Revolts & Definitions
· Social Revolt: When characters rebel against social values and conventions/institutions such as religion, love, morality, marriage, and education,
· Existential Revolt: When characters rebel against the conditions of human existence . For example, those who are depressed or attempt or commit suicide are rebelling against the conditions of life. They perceive life as meaningless. A case in point is that in Look Back in Anger, Jimmy says they should pretend that they are humans and alive.
· Messianic Revolt: When a character purports to be a messiah, ready to replace God. He/she blames God for failure in the world, questions God’s role. A benefactor messianic character wants to scrap the world and build it anew whereas a malefactor messianic character sets out to scrap it completely and without any desire to replace it. This type of revolt is prevalent in the works of Bernard Shaw. For instance, Man and Superman
