For this week's Application,
read one contemporary realistic fiction book or one historical fiction book. Make your selection based on a theme or a period/person in history that resonates with you. Use the booklists at the end of Chapters 7 and 8 (pp. 246–249 and p. 278 of the course text, and make sure that your selection is classified as intermediate or adolescent (there will be an "I" or an "A" in parentheses next to the title). While making your selection, refer to the quality guidelines outlined in your text.

Throughout this course, you have been learning that each genre of literature has the potential to make a powerful impact on readers. Explain the intricate and significant relationship between contemporary realistic fiction and the children and adolescents who read it.
Imagine that you are a librarian who has been asked to compile a list of contemporary realistic fiction for children and adolescents. What considerations related to quality would be most important to you? To what issues would you need to be sensitive?
Consider what you have learned about the genres of contemporary realistic fiction and historical fiction. In what ways are they similar? In what ways are they different? Explain at least one similarity and one difference. Then, based on these differences, what are the most significant benefits to a child reading each of these genres?
