About 7% of applicants admitted for the Class of 2020, this admissions rate to continue decreasing and the corresponding yield rate to continue increasing, with more admitted students opting to enroll at MIT rather than elsewhere. These two rates, plus several applications received, affects how many offers of admission MIT, can put out each year. There is only space for around 1,100 new first-year students each year, and there is no indication that MIT is planning to increase the class size. I don’t anticipate the number of total undergraduates rising to more than 4,500 in the next decade or two. There are plenty of rejected students who would make a great fit at MIT and would thrive and succeed but just didn’t cut at the very end.

New York University has an acceptance rate of 33%. The reason is that there are many applicants. NYU, although expensive, is excellent in specific fields (mainly, business and the performing arts). Excellent grades with intense coursework (e.g., Chemistry, Physics, Calculus, etc.), participation in activities, and a good SAT/ACT score will most likely get you in. It is hard to calculate the likelihood of acceptance because NYU, among other top-tiered schools like Brandeis, Boston U., and Georgetown, are highly sought-after universities, and competition for admission is fierce.

Harvard Business School has a strong proclivity to admit students who display enormous ‘passion’ or drive in whatever they do. The applicants who cut people from very diverse backgrounds, but the one thing that is common among them is their intense passion for their domain expertise. Applicants who display exemplary leadership inside and outside of their workspace are likely to get admitted.

Austyn Discussion:

The three leading professional associations publish a standard of practice for admissions counselors and staff to follow in order to remain ethical and ensure best practices.  Each of the three professional associations find common ground in the desire to remain ethical throughout the entire admissions process.  The Associated of Independent School Admission Professionals, or AISAP, provides ethical behavior information that outlines a number of common scenarios and appropriate responses for each, such as the appropriate, general information for an admissions officer overall as well as scenarios concerning the larger community (AISAP, 2011).  From the AISAP’s statements, I found an interesting section to concern the financial aid process, and ensuring that this is kept as distinctly apart from the admissions process as possible (AISAP, 2011).  While the other associations mention financial aid and aspects surrounding it, this specifically mentions keeping everything separate.  Many institutions recommend that students make their academic decisions based on academic factors, not financial, and the specific mention for AISAP reflects that.

For the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers, or AACRAO, there is specific mention to the importance of adequately supporting distance learning students as well as international student recruitment (AACRAO, 2016).  These stood out to me, because it brings to light the unethical nature of enrolling online or distance learning students when the institution is not adequately prepared for them.  Furthermore, AACRAO specifically notates the treatment of international students and that there should not be any recruiting practices completed for these students that would be considered unethical for domestic students (AACRAO, 2016).  While I absolutely agree with this, it is interesting that AACRAO makes specific mention to the topic.

Overall, the three leading professional associations, AACRAO, AISAP, and NACAC, provide great detail on ethical and unethical practices within the admissions process.  By following these guidelines, the admissions officers’ actions are helping to ensure that each student is considered for admission through the necessary requirements.  Alternatively, there could be favoritism played for one student over another, while these guidelines allow for fairness across the admissions platform.

Shanna Discussion:

The National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC), The American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO), and the Association of Independent School Admissions Professionals (AISAP) are the three leading associations for strategic enrollment management (SEM). These organizations have a lot of difficult tasks associated with SEM and through my creation of an SEM plan there are many different aspects that I did not envision as things that I would need to consider. These organizations consider different areas that will help create different SEM plans.

NACAC is committed to maintaining high leveled standards while promoting ethical and social responsibility among those involved in the transition process, as outlined in the Statement of Principles of Good Practice: NACAC’s Code of Ethics and Professional Practices (2016). This document is 20 pages in length. The document also contains ethical behaviors that high education professionals are expected to maintain. The AISAP has a mission to“support and advance those involved in admission and enrollment management in their responsibilities for advancing institutional mission and financial sustainability (2010).” Much like NACAC, AISAP is determined to outline ethical responsibilities of higher education professionals. Lastly, AACRAO, has similar responsibilities as its colleagues. The mission of this organization is to“provide professional development, guidelines and voluntary standards to be used by higher education officials regarding the best practices in records management, admissions, enrollment management, administrative information technology and student services (2010).”

All three of these organizations share a common mission, and that is to ensure that institutions are well informed and aware of what their responsibilities are to best serve the student. Strategic Enrollment Management take lots of working parts to functions. This means that there are many departments that should be considered when creating and implementing any new plan. Making sure that institutions know what is expected of them using one of these three leading organizations will lead the SEM down the path of success.
