Statement of Purpose

I am Abby Ibrahim, an international student from Saudi Arabia. I am a proficient speaker of Arabic and English. I write to apply for the PhD of Linguistics at your institution because your university is considered to be among the best learning institutions in the subject. I have had a long interest in studying the English language from my intermediate school studies and remains my goal and ambition. I enjoyed learning the English language in high school and carried on with its study in my graduate degree and masters studying it as a major subject. I bring my linguistic research skills, knowledge and competencies to your institution for active participation and contribution to the body of linguistic knowledge through my research activities. My short time goal is gaining in-depth knowledge in functional English and building a carrier as an accomplished lecturer in Saudi Arabia being my long time objective.

I graduated from Azuz University, Jeddah in Saudi Arabia with a Bachelor of Arts degree in the English Language in 2007. I have technical knowledge and skills in conducting academic research, i.e. collecting educational research materials, analysing them and writing a thesis and scholarly papers; acquired by studying Master of Science Education in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) from Western Salem University in 2015. During my master’s degree program, I completed a thesis on the cross-linguistic components between English and Arabic languages as part of coursework. My GPA was 4/4 which enabled me to receive the honour of Phi Kappa Phi and to join their global network of the best and brightest community of scholars and professionals.

I have held responsibilities of teaching the English language to second, third and fourth-grade students for a period of one year per respective category at King Faisal School in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia (a private elementary school) from 2007 to 2010. Also, I was the assistant supervisor of the English department in my last year at the school. The school's responsibilities of developing Arabic and English coursework and curriculum helped me focus my scholarly work on linguistics by enrolling in the master’s program. Advancing my command of linguistics in a PhD program will be relevant to my carrier development path and beneficial to my students and all disciplines that benefit from linguistics.

I would like to study applied linguistics in your institution to enrich my knowledge about the nature, grammar, and history of human language. I love drawing examples from the grammars of Arabic and English languages and would enjoy honing my skills in discovering the universal properties of human communication. I look forward to pursuing specific global aspects of human language through intensive, in-depth study of English language and exploring the examples of English language in your linguistics course and research publications.

Because language is at the centre of all humanistic disciplines. I want to study the rules that characterise phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics of a natural language in the linguistic theory. My particular studies will entail understanding the principles of morphology that are independent of syntax or phonology. Since morphology sits at the interface of syntax and phonology, I will attempt establishing the relationship between morphology and semantics as a theme I would like to address and my future goal.

In conclusion, I am an open-minded student with a passion for gaining knowledge for purposes of helping others (students) and building societies through effective use of human language in communication. I am excited and ready for the linguistic PhD challenge.
